Survey Technician
The Survey Technician position has general responsibility for the performance of land survey field work within the Transmission Lines Services– Survey/Mapping. Specific responsibilities could include any of the following: Performing variety of surveys, operating a variety of survey equipment (i.e. global positioning systems, total stations, data collectors . . .), performing survey calculations, cutting and clearing brush utilizing brush axes and chain saws, research and gathering survey deeds and plats, operating company 4-wheel drive pick-up trucks, UTV’s and boats and communicating with the public. This position requires extensive travel, and the successful candidate must be comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and upon challenging terrain.
Education Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent, required.
Possess a valid driver’s license, required.
Experience Requirements
Minimum of 1 year of land surveying experience is a plus.
Experience in operating and using land survey equipment is a plus.
Ability to learn to operate and maintain a variety of survey instruments and tools.
Ability to perform highly demanding physical tasks in a variety of conditions.
Experience in operating off-road vehicles (4-wheel drive trucks and UTV’s) is a plus.
Experience with tools such as brush axes and chainsaws are a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of land survey concepts and techniques.
Knowledge of land survey related mathematics and measurements.
The ability to read and interpret various maps and documents as it relates to land surveying and site development.
Ability to use basic office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.)
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment, multitask and work under pressure.
Strong physical fitness and endurance, with the ability to perform physically demanding tasks.
Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Valid driver’s license
Duties
Function as a part of the APC Land Survey team completing boundary surveys, topographic surveys, transmission line surveys, specific purpose surveys and other requests as needed in the support of acquisition, design and construction efforts.
Ensure all field survey equipment is in good working condition, maintained and properly calibrated.
Collect land survey data utilizing the latest survey hardware and software, including the use of total stations, data collectors and GPS instrumentation.
Conduct survey calculations and measurements
Ensure APC Survey and Mapping feature codes are correctly used.
Preparation of neat and legible land survey notes and sketches.
Researching of land records (courthouse records, company fee lands, easements and rights of way)
Work outdoors in various conditions and environments, including rough terrain and adverse weather.
Clearing brush and other obstructions using tools such as brush axes and chainsaws.
Professional communication with customers and the public as it relates to work tasks.
Regular travel is required, with overnight stays out of town.
Participation for storm and emergency response as needed.

Location
This position is considered roving, with extensive out of town overnight travel. The successful candidate must live within or within proximity to Alabama Power’s service territory. For the purposes of tax reporting, the location of record for the employee will be their home address.
